Russia exposes over 60 foreign career agents in 2003

MOSCOW. Feb. 9 (Interfax-AVN) - The Federal Security Service exposed over 60 career agents of foreign intelligence services in 2003 and stopped the activities of 37 of them. Some of the agents were caught red-handed, deputy director of the Federal Security Service Vyacheslav Ushakov told Duma deputies at a seminar in the Domodedovo district of the Moscow region on Monday.

He said they had also halted the activities of "45 agents of foreign secret services, including seven Russian citizens."

More than 700 active members and ringleaders of Chechen rebel units were killed in the anti-terrorist campaign, and over 2,000 people were detained on suspicion of being rebels last year. Some 3,500 firearms, over 4 tonnes of explosives, about 2 million cartridges and other ammunition were confiscated.

More than 80 acts of sabotage and terrorism against servicemen and military sites were prevented, and 74 people were detained on that charge. Eighteen of them have already been convicted.

More than 50 tonnes of drugs, including over 3 tonnes of heroin, were confiscated in 2003.

A total of 112 computer crime cases were opened, and 25 people were convicted and 19 brought to administrative responsibility, Ushakov said. More than 900 attempts at hacking into official databanks were prevented, he said.
