Two rebels surrender in Chechnya

GROZNY. Feb 10 (Interfax-AVN) - Two rebels have surrendered and one more has been detained, the provisional press center of the Russian Emergencies Ministry in the North Caucasus said on Tuesday.

An active participant in illegal armed formations named Anzor Kharikhanov turned himself up to the police and confessed of a murder of the Makeyevs family in the Kirov village within Grozny city limits, a press center official told Interfax- Military News Agency. The rebel said he committed the crime together with two accomplices.

Another rebel named Ibragim Tovsultanov surrendered to the police and said that he planted a landmine on a road near the Alkhan-Kala village, the official said. Tovsultanov and his accomplices subsequently detonated the landmine, damaging a Ural vehicle of the federal forces.

One more rebel was detained by the police. He had been wanted throughout Russia since 1994 for committing a series of grave crimes.

Law-enforcers are investigating the three rebels' involvement in other crimes.

Officers of the Itum-Kale temporary interior department found and seized an Utyos large-caliber machine gun with an allowance of ammunition in the yard of a house in the Bugoroi village. An investigation is underway.

Meanwhile, road police detained four automobiles with alien number plates on Monday. They are working to establish owners of the vehicles.

As many as 49 crimes were registered in Chechnya on Monday, and 29 of them were detected hot on the trail. In addition, 619 administrative violations were registered. The police examined 7,657 vehicles and 10,625 people.

The unified press center of the regional headquarters managing anti-guerilla efforts in the North Caucasus told Interfax that two rebel bases were destroyed in Chechnya on Monday.

Servicemen found a rebel depot on the outskirts of the Serzhen-Yurt village in the Shali district. The facility consisted of seven dug-outs, six guard trenches and five observer points. In addition, one of the buildings was used as a warehouse. It contained four sets of Russian-type light camouflage uniform, about 4kg of medicines for skin and pulmonary diseases, five grenade launchers, and canned food.

Another base intended for up to eight persons was found on the outskirts of the Chozhu-Chu village in the Achkhoi-Martan district. The base consisted of a shed, two guard trenches, and two observation points. Three Kalashnikov assault rifles, about 300 5.45-mm cartridges, Wahhabi literature, military equipment and maps of southeastern Chechnya were found in the base.

In addition, federals engaged in search operations found two caches on the Chechen territory.

A cache containing five VOG-17 rounds, four grenades, and numerous 5.45-mm cartridges was found in the Zandak-Ara village in the Nozhai-Yurt district. Measures are being taken to identify and detain the persons involved in setting up the cache.

The other cache was detected in the Shali district. It contained two Kalashnikov assault rifles, a Makarov pistol, two grenades, and about 3,000 cartridges of various calibers and other military-technical hardware. The ammunition was destroyed by blast. Law-enforcers have established owners of the cache and are taking measures to detain them.
