MOSCOW. Feb 10 (Interfax-AVN) - NATO and its partners, including Russia, should develop new joint measures to fight terrorism, NATO Assistant Secretary General Jean Fournet told Ekho Moskvy radio on Tuesday.
This is also true of the military component of our cooperation, Fournet said. In particular, Fournet said NATO and its partners should jointly develop plans for protecting the population from missile, chemical and biological attacks and for studying how to protect territories from missile attacks with subsequent chemical or biological contamination, he said.
Fournet said cooperation in the area of information exchange is not enough, because terrorism is no longer a national problem, but an international one.
Speaking about the issue of NATO's expansion to the east, Fournet said he believes the Russian public does not fully understand the importance of this process. It is important that our Russian partners explain to the public why cooperation between Russia and NATO is important, he said.
Fournet reiterated a statement made by NATO officials earlier that the creation of additional military bases in Europe poses no danger to Russia. NATO has already formed a special department for promoting security measures taken by NATO, he said.
