Additional police forces moved to Gali district, Abkhazia

MOSCOW. Feb 11 (Interfax-AVN) - Additional police forces are being moved to the Gali district of Abkhazia, adjacent to Georgia's Zugdidi and Tsalendjikha districts, Abkhaz Foreign Minister Sergei Shamba told Interfax-Military News Agency Wednesday.

"Abkhaz leadership has opted to move 150 more policemen to the Gali district of the republic for special anti-criminal operations," Shamba said.

He said that strong anti-criminal action underway in Georgia might bring some criminals seek shelter in Abkhazia.

According to him, the Gali district is already under high- alert transport and personal identification monitoring.

"Two persons suspected of involvement in criminality in Georgia have already been detained. Data on them have been transferred to the Zugdidi police department of Georgia for identification," Shamba said.

He emphasized that Abkhazia appreciated of Georgia's efforts to disarm the so-called "White Legion" and "Forest Brothers" Georgian guerrilla formations.

"Disarmament of these illegal formations will increase stability in the region and advance peaceful settlement of the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict," he said.
