MOSCOW. Feb 11 (Interfax-AVN) - Russian Navy Commander-in- Chief Vladimir Kuroyedov held a real-time video conference with Russian warships participating in the South Korean cruise on Wednesday.
Kuroyedov was staying at the Navy Staff's Central Command Point and the warships in the South Korean port of Inchon, formerly Chemulpo, where they arrived on Tuesday to attend celebrations of the 100th anniversary of the Varyag battle.
The Russian warship unit consists of the Pacific Fleet flagship Varyag, the large anti-submarine ship Admiral Tributs, and the small anti-submarine ship Koreyets. Their crews are involved in the events related to the anniversary.
Kuroyedov said that the anniversary was celebrated all over Russia and in the four fleets of the Russian Navy. He thanked the sailors for service and wished them a happy way back to Russian shores.
Upon completion of the visit to Inchon, the Russian warship unit will take part in a joint exercise with the South Korean Navy.
The Varyag cruiser (Commander Captain Rudnev) and the Koreyets gunboat, after a long and furious battle with outnumbering enemy on January 27 Julian (February 9 Gregorian), 1904 (in the course of the Russian-Japanese War of 1904-1905), were destroyed by their crews in order not to surrender. The Varyag was sunk and the Koreyets was exploded.
