CIS air defense systems get ready to counter terrorist air attacks

MOSCOW. March 17 (Interfax-AVN) - Countering the increasing threat of air terrorism is one of the priorities for the CIS Unified Air Defense System, Colonel General Anatoly Nogovitsyn, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Air Force, told reporters in Moscow on Wednesday.

"The contemporary development of the CIS Unified Air Defense System focuses due attention to countering emerging threats, including air terrorism," he said.

Nogovitsyn noted that air defense systems had been deployed primarily along external borders before in order to counter airspace trespassers.

"At the present time we are dispersing these assets throughout the country, primarily next to crucial administrative and industrial facilities in order to counter air terrorists, such as those, who attacked the U.S. on 9.11," the general emphasized.

He also said that the Russian airspace surveillance system was superior to the U.S. one insofar as its characteristics were concerned.

In the course of regular exercises CIS air defense forces refine simulated operations, aimed at countering air terrorists, the general stressed.
