Russian expert predicts worsening of Iraq situation

MOSCOW. March 22 (Interfax-AVN) - Colonel General Leonid Ivashov, an authoritative Russian military expert and vice president of the Academy of Geopolitical Problems, said he thinks the situation in Iraq will worsen.

"The major events are still ahead," Ivashov told Interfax on March 20.

"The Iraqi nation, particularly its most active and radical section, has understood that the only purpose for the invasion of American troops was the seizure of oil fields," said Ivashov, who is the former chief of the Defense Ministry's international military cooperation department.

"We are witnessing a national liberation war in Iraq, which is being supported by virtually all the Islamic world. The American administration has provoked an inter-civilization clash by invading Iraq," Ivashov said.

"Terrorist attacks, similar to those committed in Spain on March 11, could also take place in other European countries whose military units are incorporated in the occupation forces in Iraq," he said.
