Deserter detained in Russia's Ryazan region

MOSCOW. March 29 (Interfax-AVN) - A student of the Ryazan Airborne Academy who deserted his military unit after killing his commander has been detained, Airborne Forces spokesman Colonel Nikolai Bragin told Interfax on Sunday.

The assault rifle and cartridges the soldier had stolen from the barracks were confiscated. An investigation is in progress.

The incident happened in the Ryazan region in the early hours of Sunday.

The soldier was recruited from the Moscow region town of Mytishchi. The press service of the prosecutor's office of the Moscow military district told Interfax that the Ryazan garrison's military prosecutor's office had opened a criminal case on charges of premeditated murder, theft of weapons and violation of sentry service regulations.
