TASHKENT. March 29 (Interfax-AVN) - At least three policemen were killed in a terrorist act which occurred near a Tashkent market on Monday morning, a source in the Uzbek Interior Ministry told Interfax.
"The explosion, which occurred in the old part of the city, killed three policemen. There is no information about the other victims," the source said.
There are reports that the terrorist act could have been caused by a suicide bomber.
The Tashkent authorities are expected to issue an official statement on the incident in the near future.
Another police officer died in an exchange of fire with the terrorists' accomplices. "A car carrying explosive-laden shahid belts was stopped when it was leaving the city. The driver resisted, as a result of which a policeman was killed," the source said.
Most of the roads leading to the city are currently closed to traffic, and traffic on other roads has been restricted.
"Several attempted terrorist acts have been made in the republic," a source in the Uzbek Interior Ministry told Interfax. Some people have been detained and are already providing evidence. "It is clearly a well-planned action, someone is behind it," the source told Interfax.
