Moldova holding seminar to discuss planning, support of peacekeeping operations

CHISINAU. March 29 (Interfax-AVN) - Officials of Moldovan ministries and departments are attending a joint seminar to discuss peacekeeping operations planning and support on the governmental level, the Moldovan Defense Ministry's press service reported on Monday.

"Moldovan specialists together with experts of the U.S. Center for Civil-Military Relations will spend three days discussing the entire spectrum of problems that emerge during the preparation and departure of military contingents bound for peacekeeping operations area, primarily their legislative and social aspects," a press service official told Interfax-Military News Agency.

"Participants in the seminar pay special attention to elaborating the draft charter that will regulate participation of Moldovan military contingents in international peacekeeping operations," he said. The official quoted Brigadier General Ion Choropcian, National Army chief-of-staff, as saying that "the adoption of such a document is extremely important now as Moldovan Defense Ministry representatives have started to get involved in such missions under the UN aegis."

Moldovan servicemen are working as military observers in UN- sponsored peacekeeping operations in Cote d'Ivoire and Liberia.
