KHANKALA. April 30 (Interfax-AVN) - Federal forces suffered losses in an engagement with a rebel gang near the Janei-Vedeno village in Chechnya's Vedeno district, a source at the headquarters of the Combined Federal Forces in the North Caucasus told Interfax-Military News Agency on Friday.

"Two servicemen of the Defense Ministry were killed and two others wounded in an engagement with a rebel gang and during its pursuit in the vicinity of Janei-Vedeno," the source said.

According to him, a lieutenant and a professional sergeant were killed.

In addition, two riot policemen from the Kirov region were wounded when they came under assault rifle fire near the Chira- Yurt village, the source said.

The regional headquarters managing anti-guerilla efforts in the North Caucasus earlier told Interfax-AVN that federal troops have eliminated a rebel group near Janei-Vedeno.

The troops discovered a five-member rebel group during a special operation and tried to detain the group members. The rebels offered armed resistance and attempted to flee. One of them was killed in a shootout.

"Judging by the bloodstains and traces of two bodies being dragged, it appears two other rebels were wounded," a source at the headquarters said.
