Russia to provide military aid to Afghanistan

MOSCOW. May 7 (Interfax-AVN) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his Afghan counterpart Abdullah Abdullah discussed bilateral cooperation in fighting drug trafficking and ways in which Russia could help Afghanistan consolidate its defenses in Moscow on Friday.

"We have also worked out an understanding on continuing close cooperation in fighting international terrorism," Lavrov told a briefing after the meeting.

"We confirmed the resolve of the two countries to continue fighting terrorism," he said. Russia and Afghanistan were among the first nations to sound the alarm over the growing terrorist threat, Lavrov said.

The ministers also discussed the Middle East and Iraq and found that their views on both issues coincided, Lavrov said.

They also discussed the entire range of bilateral relations, in particular cooperation in trade and investment, he said.

Abdullah emphasized the need for closer cooperation between Russia and Afghanistan, where rebuilding efforts and the fight against terrorism are continuing.
