ST.PETERSBURG. May 11 (Interfax-AVN) - Servicemen of the Interior Ministry Force's Northwestern district detained over 2,000 public order violators and 59 criminals with the help of sniffer dogs from January 2003 to March 2004, a spokesman for the district headquarters said on Tuesday.
"In addition, 14kg of explosives were found with the help of sniffer dogs over that period," the spokesman told Interfax- Military News Agency.
The sniffer dog platoon of the St. Petersburg special-task motorized military unit has shown the district's best results in using dogs, he said.
The district's units were working hard last year to improve training facilities and dogs' residential areas.
"The district's leaders pay a lot of attention to this aspect of activity. In particular, the state of sniffer dog service in the district's units and the measures taken to improve the situation were discussed at the recent session of the district council. Lieutenant Colonel Alexei Solodyagin, chief of the sniffer dog service, made a report," the spokesman said.
