Background radiation unchanged in submarine sinking area

MURMANSK. May 18 (Interfax-Northwest) - Background radiation remains unchanged in the sinking area of the Russian K-159 nuclear submarine.

Radiation there is regularly monitored under instructions from the commander of the Northern Fleet, Interfax was told at the press service of the fleet headquarters on Monday.

"There has not been a single case when background radiation would exceed permitted figures ever since the beginning of monitoring. Background radiation in the K-159 sinking area is comparable to natural indicators," a fleet spokesman said.

He said radiation figures are also reported by all navel vessels that operate in the area during various missions.

The report was confirmed by Norwegian environmentalists who conducted independent measurements in the area.
