Remaining rebels in Chechnya scattered, uncontrollable

KHANKALA. May 28 (Interfax-AVN) - The rebel groups in the mountains in south Chechnya "are in fact completely disorganized," spokesman for the regional headquarters of the anti-terrorist operation in the North Caucasus Col. Ilya Shabalkin told Interfax on Friday.

He quoted operational reports as saying that rebel leaders now have virtually no control over the armed groups. "This is especially evident in the Vedeno district," he said.

The remaining small rebel bands are scattered and do not have a single command or contacts between groups, Shabalkin said. Rebel groups have not been receiving any instructions from separatist leaders for the past two months, including in the Vedeno district, he said. The remaining rebels move in scattered groups of two or three, he added.
