UN Security Council resolution on Iraq confirms efficiency of Russian foreign policy -- lawmaker

MOSCOW. June 9 (Interfax-AVN) - The UN Security Council resolution on Iraq has proved the efficiency of the Russian foreign policy, Colonel General Viktor Zavarzin, Chairman of the State Duma Defense Committee, said on Wednesday.

"Russia has repeatedly stated that any actions with respect to Iraq may only be conducted on consent of the UN Security Council. And the main thing is that any conflict should be settled by political, rather than military means," Zavarzin told Interfax-Military News Agency.

"Developments in Iraq have once again proved efficiency and foresight of the Russian foreign policy," he said.

He also noted that most Russian military experts had given correct predictions with regards to Iraq.

"Most Russian military experts said that Iraq would lose in the direct confrontation with the U.S. and its allies. However, they also said that the seizure of Baghdad would be the outset of the war, rather than its end. Russian experts also predicted that the Iraqis would resort to guerilla warfare and sabotage. That is exactly what has happened," he underlined.

According to him, the UN Security Council resolution on Iraq now vests responsibility for the situation in the country in both the U.S. and all UN member-states, as well as the Iraqis proper.

"This is a real precondition for improving the situation in the country," he stressed.
