Russia, Uzbekistan agree on military cooperation

TASHKENT. June 17 (Interfax-AVN) - Russia and Uzbekistan have agreed to allow each other to use military objects located on their national territories if the need arises.

This possibility is embodied in an agreement on strategic partnership signed on Wednesday by Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Uzbek counterpart Islam Karimov.

"In order to ensure security and maintain peace and stability, the sides will allow each other to use military objects that are located on their territory on the basis of separate agreements if the need arises," the agreement says.

The document defines the priority areas of bilateral military cooperation. Priorities also include training officers for the Uzbek armed forces in Russian facilities, conducting joint maneuvers, and cooperation in carrying out space exploration programs using Uzbekistan's infrastructure.
