Three suspects in Grozny terrorist act giving testimony

ST. PETERSBURG. June 17 (Interfax-Northwest) - Three suspects are being questioned about the terrorist act carried out in Grozny on May 9, which led to the death of Chechen President Akhmad Kadyrov and another five people, presidential envoy to the Southern federal district Vladimir Yakovlev told a Thursday news conference at the Interfax- Northwest office in St. Petersburg.

"Investigators have already begun unraveling the case," and it is possible that notorious terrorist Shamil Basayev is behind it, he said.

Meanwhile, a representative of the Russian Prosecutor General's Office in the Southern federal district told Interfax on Thursday that they are checking Basayev's possible involvement in the terrorist act.

The Prosecutor General's Office does not have information about the current whereabouts of Basayev, he said.

Chechen State Council Chairman Taus Jabrailov said they had information that Basayev was in poor health and had been secretly taken to a European country.
