CHERKESSK. June 17 (Interfax-South) - Additional border guard forces may be deployed at the Karachayevo-Cherkessia section of the Russian-Georgian border in the event that tensions may escalate in Georgia's self-proclaimed republic of Abkhazia.
"Everything is as usual on the border so far. We are in full control of the situation there," Karachayevo-Cherkessia's Deputy Interior Minister Gaidar Shidakov told a news conference in Cherkessk on Thursday.
Two people who illegally crossed the border with Abkhazia have recently been detained in Karachayevo-Cherkessia. A total of 15 people have been detained for illegally crossing the Russian- Georgian border at this section since the beginning of 2004, against 13 detained over the last year as a whole.
Shidakov expressed hope that a resolution signed by Karachayevo-Cherkessia's President Mustafa Batdyev establishing borders in the republic's three districts "will help sustain the security of the republic's population."
