TBILISI. June 23 (Interfax-AVN) - A special-purpose detachment of the Georgian Interior Ministry's border guard department and several other special-purpose units are ready for relocation to possible breakthrough areas of rebels fleeing from Ingushetia, Kornely Salia, the department's chief-of-staff, said on Wednesday.
The Georgian border guard department and Russia's North Caucasus regional border guard directorate have decided to maintain permanent contact in connection with the developments in Ingushetia, Salia told Interfax-Military News Agency.
He said he personally communicates regularly with the North Caucasus directorate headquarters and quoted Russian colleagues as saying that access of the rebels to the Russian-Georgian border is nearly out of the question.
Nevertheless, Georgia has strengthened its northern border. Ten additional pickets were deployed on the Chechen, Ingush and Dagestani sections last month.
