IAEA hails Russian offer to build intl nuclear waste depot

MOSCOW. June 28 (Interfax-AVN) - International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Mohamed ElBaradei on Sunday welcomed a Russian offer to build an international storage facility for spent nuclear fuel.

More than 50 countries possess stockpiles of spent nuclear fuel. ElBaradei told an international conference in Moscow that Finland, Sweden, and the United States had made the greatest progress in building safe storage facilities for it. The United States plans to launch a facility at Yucca Mountain, Nevada, by 2010.
