Sixteen detained for suspected involvement in Ingushetia raids (Part 2)

MOSCOW. July 2 (Interfax-AVN) - Sixteen people have been detained on suspicion of involvement in the June 21 raids on several communities in Ingushetia, and some of them have been indicted, Russian Prosecutor General Vladimir Ustinov said.

"What counts most now is to determine how something like this could happen," Ustinov said speaking at a session of the Prosecutor General's Office board on Friday.

The prosecutor general demanded that his local subordinates, particularly prosecutors in the North Caucasus region, "make very serious conclusions."

"What is more, I demand that you check how laws are observed in the relevant law enforcement agencies, particularly the police," Ustinov said.

"We are all experts in throwing punches after the fight is over, so do check, in line with the law on counter-terrorism, what the state pays for those who are obliged to prevent extraordinary situations in the provinces," he said.

Ustinov ordered that the results of the inspection be reported to him in a month. "As for Deputy Prosecutor General Sergei Fridinsky, I expect a detailed account from him in the near future on the course of the investigation," he said.

Ustinov also said that among the large number of people killed in the raid were five prosecution officials.
