Russia, Japan complete submarine disposal ahead of schedule

MOSCOW. Aug 2 (Interfax-AVN) - Russia and Japan have completed the disposal of a Russian nuclear submarine of the Viktor-1 class, which was supposed to be scrapped by autumn, the Federal Atomic Energy Agency told Interfax.

"The sections removed from the sub will be towed to the bay for storage soon. The Zvezda ship repair facility is responsible for the operation," an agency spokesman said.

"We are currently negotiating on the disposal of another Russian nuclear sub in the Far East," he said.

In 1993, Russia and Japan set up a cooperation committee to promote the disposal of nuclear weapons in Russia. Thus far, 20 billion yen have been assigned to this project.

Japan is ready to assign over $100 million to Russia for projects related to the dismantling of decommissioned nuclear submarines in the Far East and $100 million for the disposal of surplus weapons grade plutonium.

By August 2, 76 nuclear weapons had been withdrawn from service, 35 of them had been scrapped, 11 are under disposal, and 30 are awaiting disposal.
