MOSCOW. August 3 (Interfax-AVN) - Chairman of the State Duma committee for CIS affairs and relations with compatriots and former Security Council secretary Andrei Kokoshin thinks Russia should retain the strategic nuclear triad in future.
"Russia should retain three components of the Strategic Nuclear Forces (SNF), which will increase their stability and invulnerability dramatically, thus ensuring strategic stability as a whole," he said Monday at the 'round table' on strategic stability, held in Moscow by the Institute for international security of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
According to the lawmaker, air and naval legs of the triad cannot be disposed of. "Let the share of these components be small in the SNF total strength, but it still will provide increased stability of the whole nuclear deterrence system owing to the strategic effect," he said commenting on the suggestions by some experts in Russia to concentrate all nuclear deterrence capability in the Strategic Missile Force.
He added that the Russian nuclear deterrence assets are vital to ensure security and real sovereignty of Russia, and even to bring global strategic stability in a number of most important segments of international politics.
"Many cornerstones of strategic stability, laid down by Russian scientific achievements and subsequent development of delivery systems, are still playing their significant part today. Therefore, the State Duma shall support the initiative of President, Commander-in-Chief, and military leaders of Russia," he said.
