Maritime border guards apprehend almost 200 trespassers in Gulf of Finland in 2004

ST. PETERSBURG. Aug 6 (Interfax-AVN) - Maritime border guards of the North Western Regional Border Guard Directorate have reported 192 violations on the part of Russian and foreign vessels in 2004, the North Western Regional Border Guard Directorate headquarters told Interfax-Military News Agency on Friday.

"Maritime border guards have reported 192 violations since the turn of 2004. Trespassers have been fined for a total of 108,000 Russian rubles ($3,700), while border guards have filed damage suits for a total of 26,000 Russian rubles ($890) for illegal fishing, and confiscated 592 kg of illegally caught fish," the headquarters said.

According to it, maritime border guards have inspected 168 vessels, fishing in the Gulf of Finland, and carried out 930 operations, aimed at monitoring maritime fishing, as well as 4,996 inspections, aimed at determining if fishing is conducted legally.

"At the present time, the intensity of maritime border guard operations has been scaled down, since industrial fishing is not conducted," the headquarters said.
