Russia drafting new law on combating terrorism - MP

MOSCOW. Aug 25 (Interfax-AVN) - The defense and security committee of the Russian Federation Council has teamed up with the Defense Ministry, Justice Ministry and Federal Security Service (FSB) to draft a new bill on combating terrorism, committee chairman Viktor Ozerov said on Wednesday.

"Following an initiative of the Federation Council, our committee's working group has teamed up with representatives of the Russian Defense Ministry, Justice Ministry and FSB to draft a new bill devoted to combating terrorism. The document is considerably different from the current law passed in 1988. It for the first time names the bodies responsible for combating terrorism on the Russian soil, in its territorial waters and air space," Ozerov told Interfax-Military News Agency.

The bill will specify the role of the Armed Forces, Interior Ministry Force and other uniformed agencies in combating terrorism, he said.

"The bill will also outline functions of the Russian anti- terrorist commission and propose creation of a single national center for combating terrorism in the air space and territorial waters," the lawmaker noted.

Speaking about the two plane crashes that occurred in Russia overnight to Wednesday, Ozerov said, "The necessity to pass a new law on combating terrorism will be more than obvious if we get a confirmation that the two passenger planes crashed as a result of terrorist attacks."
