Georgian villagers do not let peacekeepers dig trench across road

TBILISI. Aug 26 (Interfax-AVN) - Residents of the Georgian- populated village of Eredvi in South Ossetia on Wednesday filled in a trench that Russian and South Ossetian peacekeepers had dug in the area of Tskhinvali that connected Georgian villages in the valleys of the Bolshaya and Malaya Liakhva rivers.

Stanislav Nabdzorov, commander of the Joint Peacekeeping Force in the conflict zone, ordered the digging of the trench without having cleared his move with Georgian authorities, a police official of Shida Kartli area told Interfax.

South Ossetia, whose capital is Tskhinvali, is legally a province of Georgia whose capital city is Tbilisi but it has been de facto independent after hostilities in 1990s. Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili is attempting to restore control over South Ossetia, which is seeking international recognition. The uneasy ceasefire between them has been repeatedly interrupted by skirmishes over the last month.
