MOSCOW. Aug 26 (Interfax-AVN) - The Russian president has signed an instruction to clear the way for Germany to transit military equipment and personnel to Afghanistan via Russia.
The instruction, the text of which was published on the Russian president's official website, endorses a government proposal on the signing of a supplementary protocol to the intergovernmental agreement with Germany on the transit of military equipment and personnel to Afghanistan via Russia.
"The Russian Foreign Ministry is instructed to sign the said protocol on the Russian government's behalf, allowing, if necessary, to include it in a draft, approved by the Russian government, of amendments and additions that are not integral in nature," says the instruction.
The government will need to work out a system for implementing the supplementary protocol, the document said.
The two governments signed the military transit agreement in Yekaterinburg in October 2003 in connection with the German military's involvement in efforts to stabilize Afghanistan.
