Federal forces kill over 60 rebels in Chechnya

GROZNY. Aug 26 (Interfax-AVN) - Over 60 rebels have been killed in Chechnya over the past five days, the regional headquarters of the anti-guerilla operation in the North Caucasus told Interfax-Military News Agency on Thursday.

"In the course of special operations carried out by federal forces in Grozny and a number of other Chechen districts, over 60 rebels were killed when their groups were exposed and came under fire," said federal forces spokesman Ilya Shabalkin.

The rebels have been persistent in trying to inflict losses on federal troops, he said.

"On Thursday, in the settlement of Karpinsk near Grozny, the rebels shot at a car carrying a member of the Interior Affairs department of the Sharoi district. He suffered gunshot wounds," Shabalkin said. These were the actions of "a gang of four people in a car," the spokesman said.
