SEVERODVINSK. Aug 27 (Interfax-Northwest) - Canada will finance the disposal of three Russian nuclear submarines.
The subs, which belong to the Victor class in NATO classification, will be brought to the Zvyozdochka state shipbuilding plant in the Arkhangelsk region city of Severodvinsk, a plant source told Interfax.
The planned financing is based on a Russian-Canadian agreement under which Canada is to provide 24.4 million Canadian dollars (US$18 million) to help Russia scrap nuclear submarines.
This is part of Canada's commitment to allocate up to CA$1 billion under the Global Partnership Against Weapons of Mass Destruction program that is being pursued by the Group of Eight industrialized countries (G8) and was proclaimed at a G8 summit in Kananaskis, Canada in 2002.
