Security measures enhanced at Moscow arms shows

MOSCOW. Sept 7 (Interfax-AVN) - Additional security measures have been taken at the Interpolitex 2004 exhibition of special police and military hardware and the IDELF 2004 exhibition of military purpose products for the Land Forces, which opened in Moscow on Tuesday.

"Under the circumstances of the escalating fight against international crime and terrorism in and around the capital city, the Moscow region police have teamed up with the Russian Interior Ministry to work out and introduce a series of measures aimed at enhancing security of Interpolitex 2004 and IDELF 2004 arms shows," Colonel Viktor Krykhtin, deputy head of the Moscow region police department, told Interfax-Military News Agency.

"Over 260 policemen wearing uniform or regular clothes are implementing these security measures," Krykhtin said.

In addition to maintaining order on the shows' territory, the policemen have teamed up with the traffic police to escort the buses that deliver visitors to the shows, he noted.

"I must say that all visitors, including VIPs, go through stationary metal detectors. We are also examining personally all visitors and their personal belongings," Krykhtin stressed.

The colonel, who heads the operations headquarters responsible for security at the shows, said that regional riot police officers and policemen with sniffer dogs are on duty at the main checkpoints of the exhibition center.

"We have special assets capable of detecting and defusing explosive devices, as well as well-trained personnel, and we can use them in case of emergency," Krykhtin stressed.

The Interpolitex and IDELF exhibitions feature the most competitive pieces of small-arms intended for general and special purposes.
