Russia limiting passage across Azerbaijan border

MOSCOW. Sept 14 (Interfax-AVN) - Russia has imposed "certain restrictions" from Wednesday on border crossings with Azerbaijan, "due to recent terrorist acts in the North Caucasus and the aggravation of the situation in the region," a Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman said.

"In particular, the passage of persons and means of transportation through the Yarag-Kazmalyar, Tagirkent-Kazmalyar, Novofilya, and Garakh checkpoints is to be limited," spokesman Alexander Yakovenko said, adding that the restrictions would be temporary.

He said Garakh would be open only for children going to school and adults going to work. The other checkpoints would let through no one except Russian and Azerbaijani citizens returning home.

Yakovenko said the restrictions would be lifted gradually as checkpoints are re-equipped and as the general situation in the North Caucasus is normalized.

"We are sure that the decision that has been mentioned will be met with understanding in Azerbaijan, with which Russia maintains a high level of cooperation, including in combating terrorism," he said.
