Federal forces in Chechnya pursue rebel group

GROZNY. Sept 15 (Interfax-AVN) - Federal forces are conducting an operation to eliminate a rebel group in Chechnya's Vedeno district.

"An armed clash took place between a federal formation and a group of seven rebels near Dargo in the Vedeno district," a spokesman for the regional headquarters of the anti-terrorist operation in the North Caucasus told Interfax on Wednesday.

"Three rebels were killed and four others are trying to escape. They are being pursued," he said.

A federal intelligence unit discovered the rebels on Tuesday. "They were surrounded and told to surrender their weapons but they put up armed resistance," the spokesman said.

Federal forces confiscated three assault rifles, ammunition, explosives, grenades, food, and medicines. No IDs were found on guerillas killed, the official said.
