Five rebels eliminated in Dagestan - Interior Ministry

MAKHACHKALA. Sept 20 (Interfax-AVN) - A group of five rebels was eliminated in a sweep police operation near Makhachkala on Sunday. Two policemen were killed in the fighting, Dagestani Interior Minister Adilgerei Magomedtagirov told the press.

"The rebels were eliminated in a forest outside the village of Talgi. A rebel base was also discovered," Magomedtagirov said.

"This base could have been used to prepare terrorist attacks in Dagestan," the minister said.

The Dagestani Interior Ministry's press service earlier reported that policemen discovered a camp during a search operation in a forest near the village of Talgi at 10 a.m. on Sunday. The policemen clashed with the rebels after fire was opened at them from the camp, the press service said.

Investigators working at the scene of the clash earlier told Interfax that three policemen and three rebels had been killed.
