Militant involved in Sept 25 Chechnya murders identified

KHANKALA. Sept 27 (Interfax-AVN) - Law enforcement agencies have established the name of one of the rebels involved in the murder of four law enforcement officers in Grozny's Leninsky district late on September 25, federal forces spokesman Ilya Shabalkin told Interfax.

The rebel's name is Mashugov, and he is a member of the Shamil Basayev group, Shabalkin told Interfax.

He denied reports that the four servicemen killed on September 25 are Federal Security Service officers.

The officers were carrying out an operation to find rebel leaders on Saturday evening and stopped two cars for a check. The people inside one of the cars produced their documents under the names of an Interior Ministry and law enforcement representatives, but one of the identification cards had no photograph and was obviously a fake.

When the identification card was being checked against a database, the men opened fire from the car. Four servicemen were killed.

An operation to find and detain the rebels is underway, Shabalkin said.
