Russian-U.S. naval exercise about to begin in Northern Sea

SEVEROMORSK. Sept 28 (Interfax-AVN) - Russia and the U.S. are about to launch the Northern Eagle naval exercise in the Northern Sea, a source in the Russian Northern Fleet headquarters told Interfax-Military News Agency on Tuesday.

Russia will be represented at the exercise by the Severomorsk and Admiral Levchenko large anti-submarine craft, the source said. The ships "will arrive at the Norwegian port of Stavanger today for updating the exercise scenario," he noted.

"Rear Admiral Sergei Avakyants, chief-of-staff of a Northern Fleet squadron, who heads the voyage, will take part in the exercise plan update in Stavanger," the source went on.

The press release of the U.S. Embassy in Russia, obtained by Interfax-Military News Agency on Tuesday, reads that "the Hue City cruiser of the U.S. Navy will take part in the Northern Eagle exercise with Russian Northern Fleet ships from September 28 to October 5."

"It is the first bilateral exercise with the Russian Northern Fleet. Its objective is to strengthen cooperation in the security sphere between the U.S. and Russia through providing its participants with a possibility to hold various naval exercise in real-life conditions," the press release reads.

Participants in the exercise will accomplish a series of navigation, communication and supply missions, as well as practice interaction in the search for aircraft and rescue of their crews.

In addition to the Hue City, the U.S. will be represented at the exercise by two Sea Hawk helicopters. The Russian ships also carry two KA-27 Helix helicopters.
