Police officer killed in Chechnya

GROZNY. Oct 12 (Interfax-AVN) - One police officer was killed and another wounded in Chechnya on Monday.

The body of a police officer with gunshot wounds was discovered in the Staropromyslovsky district in Grozny, a source at the Chechen Interior Ministry told Interfax on Tuesday. His Kalashnikov assault rifle, Makarov handgun and car had been stolen.

In Chechen-Aul near Grozny, a group of men in camouflage and masks carrying automatic weapons entered the house of another police officer who was visiting his family. They beat him up, threatened to shoot him, and stole his service weapons.

Meanwhile, one gunman was killed in an exchange of fire between a special purpose police unit and militants near Avtury in the Shali district, a local police source told Interfax. The gunman has been identified, the source said.
