One killed in armed clash in Georgian-S. Ossetian conflict zone

TBILISI. Oct 13 (Interfax-AVN) - One man was killed in armed clashes that occurred between the villages of Medzhvriskhevi and Gromi in the Georgian-South Ossetian conflict zone on Tuesday, the Shida Kartli regional police told Interfax.

Georgian law enforcement officers who rushed to the scene detained two Ossetians, one of whom had been wounded. They also found the body of a man, who was supposedly an Ossetian, the Interfax source said.

The police did not specify with whom the armed Ossetians could have been engaged in a shootout.

South Ossetia is legally a province of Georgia, but an armed conflict in the early 1990s led to its de facto independence. Tensions between Tbilisi and Tskhinvali have escalated in recent months, involving numerous armed clashes.
