Russian weapons might turn non-competitive unless IT introduced – expert

MOSCOW. Oct 15 (Interfax-AVN) - Exerts in information technologies think that unless the follow-on information support of Russian defense industry products is ensured, the equipment and weapons of Russian makes will turn non-competitive in the international market in the coming five years.

"One of the main reasons why Russian defense products are increasingly losing competitiveness is the lack of the follow-on information support of their life cycle. Despite the scientific and technological backlog we are having now, most of enterprises of the defense industry are hard up and can easily lose the positions in the international market in the coming five years," Boris Rapoport, Director General of the Alfa-Integrator Company, told Interfax-Military News Agency Friday.

"The experience of the world's leading countries shows that single information field and corporate management systems are the priorities of strategic development plans aimed to become advantageous over contenders," he said.

According to him, Russian defense industry enterprises that introduced such systems have felt it too. Among these he named the Ufa engine-building association, which is the leader of the Russian engine building. Over 90 percent of its profits come from sales of air engines to the Sukhoi Holding Company and the Irkut Corporation.

"Great economic indices of the association, reflected in the forecasts of growing revenues made by leading investing analysts, were achieved at the expense of effective corporate information management systems," he added.

He noted as well that the administrative personnel of the company though that the corporate information system would be the main tool to improve the effectiveness of the enterprise from the very beginning, and therefore collated own approaches to the issue with the experience of the French engine building giant, Snecma Moteurs.

"It is owing to the introduction of the corporate information system that the Ufa engine building association improved its quality management to say nothing of much better economic indices," he said.
