KHANKALA. Nov 2 (Interfax-AVN) -- Two active participants in illegal armed groups turned themselves in to Chechen law enforcement agencies over the past 24 hours, spokesman for the federal forces in the North Caucasus Ilya Shabalkin told Interfax on Tuesday.
The militants fought in gangs that were active in the Nadterechnaya and Urus-Martan districts of Chechnya, as well as in Ingushetia, Shabalkin said. Both militants are providing important evidence, he said.
The surrenders were the result of a widespread information campaign undertaken by elders and the police in various Chechen regions, he said. They are asking people whose relatives are fighting in illegal units to urge the militants to surrender voluntarily to the authorities.
