STAVROPOL. Nov 9 (Interfax-AVN) - Border guards of the Southern federal district detained over 2,200 violators from January to October 2004, the press service of the North Caucasus regional border guard directorate reported on Tuesday.
"Border guards of the directorate have detained over 900 border trespassers and over 1,300 violators of border crossing rules since the beginning of the year," a press service official told Interfax-Military News Agency.
According to him, border guards prevented the smuggling of goods worth over $1.47 million and fined violators for over 4.4 million Russian rubles ($153,520).
Naval border guards operating on the Azov, Caspian and Black Seas seized over 1,170 boats and over 468 tonnes of illegally obtained fish and seafood over the period under consideration. They filed suits worth over 9 million Russian rubles ($314,020) against violators.
