Georgian villages in S. Ossetia shelled

TBILISI. Nov 11 (Interfax-AVN) - Georgian villages in the valley of the Bolshaya Likhva river in South Ossetia again came under fire from Ossetian positions early on Thursday, a law enforcement source in Georgia's Shida Kartli province told Interfax.

Small arms and larger caliber fire damaged several houses in the village of Tamarasheni but there were no injuries, the source said.

"The gangs firing at Georgian villages from commanding heights must be withdrawn in the coming days in line with the Sochi understandings and their positions must be taken over by trilateral peacekeeping units," regional police chief Alexander Sukhitashvili said.

"These circumstances seem not to suit the militants, so they open provocative fire in an effort to add tension to the situation," he said.

South Ossetia is legally a Georgian province, but an armed conflict in the early 1990s led to its de facto independence. Tensions between Tbilisi and the South Ossetian capital of Tskhinvali have escalated in recent months, involving gunfire and casualties.
