SUKHUMI. Nov 12 (Interfax-AVN) - A routine inspection to sum up the results of the summer training term will start in units of the breakaway republic of Abkhazia next week, Major General Anatoly Zaitsev, Abkhaz Deputy Defense Minister, told Interfax-Military News Agency over the telephone Friday.
"We are inspecting the administrative personnel now," he said.
"It means that the political crisis currently observed in Abkhazia did not affect the Armed Forces of the republic," he added.
At the same time, he said, the major maneuver units had been on high alert service duty since late October.
"Within the background of the complicated political situation in Abkhazia, Georgia has been regrouping its forces in the western direction, reinforcing the military and police contingents. This is why the units are on high alert," he said.
"The Georgian side has also become more active at sea: some of its military ships approached Gagry, but were forced to retreat by our naval forces," he said.
Zaitsev added that there were reports of Georgian forces' regrouping in the Kodori Gorge, which is the only area in Abkhazia where Tbilisi enjoys full control after the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict of 1992-1993.
