Armed Forces chief of staff to attend Russia-NATO Council

MOSCOW. Nov 15 (Interfax-AVN) - Russian Armed Forces Chief of Staff Yury Baluyevsky left for Brussels on Sunday to attend a session of the Russia-NATO Council on Tuesday.

Prior to that meeting, which will involve NATO chiefs of staff, Baluyevsky will meet with the chairman of the alliance's Military Committee and the NATO supreme allied commander in Europe on Monday, Defense Ministry sources told Interfax-Military News Agency.

On Tuesday, Baluyevsky will also attend a meeting of the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council.

"The agenda for the Russia-NATO Council session will be dominated by military contacts between Russia and the alliance," one of the sources said.

Other issues will involve steps to stop the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and counter international terrorism, the source said.

"The Brussels session is expected to address the course of NATO's Operation Active Endeavor in the Mediterranean Sea. A few days ago, Russian combat ships joined the alliance's operation, which is aimed at preventing the spread of weapons of mass destruction, missile technologies and their components," the source said.

Baluyevsky is expected to return to Moscow late on Tuesday.
