KHANKALA. Nov 15 (Interfax-AVN) - Federal troops have prevented a major act of terrorism on the Grozny-Vedeno highway, one of the busiest in Chechnya, spokesman for the regional headquarters of the anti-terrorist operation in the North Caucasus Major General Ilya Shabalkin told Interfax on Monday.
He said sappers discovered a powerful land mine planted under a burned vehicle on the road between Argun and Mesker-Yurt. The mine was neutralized.
Shabalkin said that if the bomb had exploded, it could have caused numerous casualties among civilians because many bus routes run along the highway.
He also said that in the mountains in the south a militant base was discovered and eliminated near Arsenoi, Shatoi district. The base accommodated 15 persons and included observation trenches, dining quarters and a store of ammunition, civilian clothes and uniforms.
Law enforcers found two secret depots of arms and ammunition in Gudermes. Local residents tipped off the police about one of them.
