Spanish military may deploy in Iraq only on UN mandate – Defense Minister

MOSCOW. Nov 16 (Interfax-AVN) - Spanish Defense Minister Jose Bono said Spanish troops might deploy in Iraq only if authorized by the United Nations.

He told reporters in Moscow after negotiations with his Russian counterpart Sergei Ivanov that the very first day his government came in force it decided to withdraw the Spanish troops from Iraq.

"We are not only sure that we are right, but even assume that the forces of Spain should never have been sent to Iraq without the appropriate mandate of the UN," he said.
