Police neutralize bomb in Grozny

GROZNY. Nov 17 (Interfax-AVN) - Law enforcement officers and military servicemen discovered and neutralized an improvised explosive device set to detonate in Grozny's Staropromyslovsky district, the district police told Interfax on Wednesday.

An explosion could have caused numerous casualties, the police said. The people who planted the bomb are being searched for, the police said.

A cache containing projectiles, radio-controlled explosive devices, and military gear was also found on the outskirts of the village of Roshni-Chu in the Urus-Martan district, the police said. An investigative team is working at the scene now.

Another cache with explosives and grenades was found near the community of Andreyevskaya Dolina in Grozny's Zavodskoi district.

Grozny's Oktyabrsky district police told Interfax that a group of unidentified attackers fired automatic weapons and grenade launchers at a checkpoint manned by a special riot police unit (OMON), who opened return fire and forced the attackers to retreat. No policemen were hurt thanks to the fact that the checkpoint was properly fortified, it said.

Another incident occurred in the Oktyabrsky district. A serviceman drafted from Chechnya fired a machine-gun from a house's window at cars passing by. Nobody was injured. The incident is being investigated.
