Russia, Chile to sign interstate military and technical cooperation agreement during Putin’s visit

MOSCOW. Nov 19 (Interfax-AVN) - Russia and Chile are expected to sign an interstate agreement in the sphere of military and technical cooperation during Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to the Latin American country, Chilean Ambassador to Moscow Mario Silberman told Interfax Friday.

"The leaders of the two states will sign an agreement on military and technical cooperation in the framework of President Putin's visit," he said.

"With this juridical basis in mind, the Defense Ministries of our countries will be able to consider various ways of cooperation, which seems quite promising," he added,

He also said that the mutual interest of Russia and Chile in military and technical cooperation is a result of their partnership over the last two years in the UN Security Council, in which Chile is an elected member, "because the country's solid participation in the UN peacekeeping missions in Kosovo and Haiti can undoubtedly rely on dedicated technologies, materiel and equipment of the Russian origin."

Silberman noted that the agreement is also expected to include provisions for more active exchange of specialists with the aim to train them at military academies of the two countries.

"Visits of high-ranking officials of various Armed Forces branches will help us become closer and learn more of each other," he said.
