Chechen special-purpose regiment to combat terrorism throughout North Caucasus

MOSCOW. Nov 23 (Interfax-AVN) - A special-purpose regiment named after deceased Chechen president Akhmad Kadyrov, which the Chechen Interior Ministry has set up, will combat terrorism both in Chechnya and adjacent North Caucasian regions, Chairman of the Chechen State Council Taus Jabrailov said on Tuesday.

"The regiment will work on the territory of both the Chechen Republic and adjacent republics," Jabrailov told a news conference at the Interfax main office.

The special-purpose regiment, numbering 1,145 people, has recently held a successful operation in the Chechen village of Vedeno, he said.

"Representatives of bandit formations and the closest associates of Shamil Basayev (a prominent Chechen warlord - Interfax-AVN) were destroyed as a result of this operation," Jabrailov stressed.

The regiment is fully manned and has all the required transport and technical assets. "It is actively accomplishing assigned missions at the moment," the official noted.
