Russian Armed Forces operate over 500,000 armored vehicles

MOSCOW. Nov 29 (Interfax-AVN) - The Russian Armed Forces operate over 500,000 armored vehicles, Army General Alexei Moskovsky, Deputy Defense Minister for Armament, told Interfax-Military News Agency on Monday.

"Such a great number of armor in service with the Armed Forces shows that the priority consists in modernizing existing vehicles," Moskovsky said.

"All types of armored vehicles feature a high modernization potential," he emphasized.

Moskovsky also dwelt on the plans of fielding new armament.

"The new Iskander tactical missile system to enter service with the Land Forces has already been tested. Documents on fielding it in 2005 will be worked out in the near future," he said.

In addition to that, two SSBNs and nine spacecraft will also be fielded in 2005, he said.

"Thus, we are complying with all decisions, adopted by President Vladimir Putin," Moskovsky said.

On Monday Moskovsky participated in the celebrations, dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the Russian Armed Forces Directorate of the Chief of Armament and the Russian Defense Ministry's Armor Directorate.
